@lindemann06 Rob, I love the last one there is nothing that beats a full head of steam in all its glory. There is nothing that compares to the pure enjoyment of steam power. Expensive, yes I suppose it is but worth every penny, as it's an investment and it will last for ever, even more so if the crank shaft has needle roller bearings. Regards, Gary.

@lindemann06 Hi Rob, thanks for the photos and I love the last one, they tend to photo better on a cold day when you can see the steam exhaust. Your ceramic fibre paper insulation gasket is available also on Amazon, just thought I would mention that in passing. Saito make some really nicely engineered steam engines and the T2DR IS a well proven model. I checked out your Hercules Steam Tug, to find the asking price is £625.00, that is a serious amount of cash. That is one seriously expensive boat you have there. Regards, Gary. (Just a passing thought that I will stick to my butane propane gas canisters, and I always fit a gas cut off valve, I once got caught short and ran out of water, I will never forget the awful smell of cremated hard wood strips around the boiler.)

@GaryLC This is the Saito Hercules steam tug. It has a fiberglass hull, with wood superstructure and deck. It has a twin cylinder Saito vertical engine, with a horizontal boiler - very similar to your powerplant. It runs on denatured alcohol, fed by a Saito 90cc fuel tank and burner.

@lindemann06 Hi, well that certainly took some finding, and I am pretty sure that this is what I was looking for. I found it on eBay care of Pottery Pro U/K, it is insulation for wood burning stoves, it is Ceramic Fibre Insulation Gasket in sheets of 611mm x 300mm and there are three thicknesses of 1, 2, and 3mm. Mine is 3mm or 1/8". There you go, instructions on how to insulate your boiler and keep the heat in. Let me know how you get on with that one. Regards, Gary.

@lindemann06 Hello, and good morning, I am afraid I have a minor problem in the fact I can not remember or recall the name of this insulating material. As I bought it years ago and have used it on most boats between the boiler base and the deck. It is white in colour and feels like a thick felt material, it also comes in various thicknesses. I will do some research and get back to you later. I am very interested in your boat photo as it looks like the real deal and steam, as the hatches on the engine housing are open. @lindemann06 Yes that is aluminium adessive tape as I didn't want to glue on the 1/8" insulating material which is under the aluminium tape. This does work rather well and prevents boiler heat escaping. If it was an open launch I would settle the normal laminated hard wood strips approach, which is normal and what one would use. Of course with the Drifter the super structure hides every thing. Regards, Gary.

@Wolle Hi Wolle, I would say between 2 to 3 years, that was an awful lot of thinking about it as good access to the engine was the priority. Magnets to hold down the removable deck would have been a better idea, and not to late to make that upgrade. Regards, Gary.

North Sea Drifters and Steam Engines.

As there seems to be a fair amount of interest in North Sea Drifters and the Britannia at the moment, and besides the fact it does take a fair bit of thought and planning to make this work, I thought I would share with you a few photos of how I managed to accomplish this task. Without a shadow of a doubt the biggest challenge ever was fitting a boiler and steam engine into a Clyde Puffer as everything needs to go at the extreme back end. Mind it can be done with a lot of thought, sprockets chains and lay shafts, not forgetting the bearings and housings for the same. The first steam engine was fitted to the Anteo a Harbour Berthing Tug by Panart which has to be the best ever kit with regard to instructions, brass fittings, and exceptional timber. I think the photos are self explanatory hopefully. (note the crate on the fish hatch cover it hides the gas valve.) Feel free to comment and ask questions. Regards Gary.
