Have had these figures for some years now Drewboy, they are white metal, and I got them from one of the modelling shows, scale is 1/48.

A sad tale indeed Nerys.
Only bright spot being that Frank and his Mate were taken off OK.

A few weeks after telling me this story. Frank and I met up on our barges in the Royal Group of Docks. He was locking out early the next morning, I was yet to load. When I had loaded, two days later, I rang the office to tell them and was greeted with, 'Frank sank last night' We were both bound for Whitstable. He had anchored in the East Swale to await the tide into the harbour. It came on to blow very hard and with the pitching and the waves breaking over her, Frank realised 'Colonia' was breaking up. He fired a couple of rockets and eventually he and his mate were taken off by the Southend lifeboat. 'Colonia' brokr up and sank, and thus ended the life of another sailing barge

Doug's story of a crew member coming out and doing a pee to loo'ard reminds me of a true event on a Thames Sailing barge. Frank, a friend of mine, skipper of the Colonia, was sailing peacefully up Sea Reach, outer end of the Thames, needed a poo, now the only toilet on a barge was a bucket, or sometimes at sea, squat on the quarter board and do it over the side. Nice sunny day, so this is what Frank did, mate at the wheel, all well in the world. He'd been sitting there for a while, when suddenly there was a loud cheer from astern. A P & O liner was overtaking him, a large number of passengers were standing on deck and applauding his efforts. True story.

Duffle coats were worn during wartime and for some years after, I must admit to being very grateful for one, standing at the wheel well into the fifties.

Most memorable moving crew I remember seeing was on a tug, where the cabin door opens and the Mate comes out, and pees over the rail😮 Lee side of course😉
Don't ask me to find it, was years and several PCs ago on a German model site.

Hi Rooky,
I have seen some boats with moving crew on utube, but I am unable to find them again.

If it looks right it probably is.

Yes! believe it, they used to wear duffel coats at sea,
My period boats are built as they were in the correct period.🙃

All those Duffle coats, looks as if she's been at sea since 1945.
