My next project...not a boat

I built two Muskoka chairs 30 years ago when first starting to work at Aurora High School in the Technology Department. I taught at this school for nearly twenty years. It was in the woodshop that the department head took me under his wing as a beginning woodshop teacher.

We still have those Muskoka chairs but as you may know that style of chair places your backside very low to the ground. Comfortable, but requires an effort to get out of it.

This new chair has some of the characteristics of a Muskoka design utilizing the curved back and broad arm rests. But, the back of the seat is higher which makes standing very easy. I made a small change in the location of the back, moving it 1” farther back which puts the seat in a better position for folks that are tall.

I cut all but the seat slats with my band saw, the slats were easier done on the table-saw.

You can see here how much lower a person would sit in the brown Muskoka chair versus the lighter chair design which I just built.

That was quick work Ron,
After staining maybe a couple of soft cushions and a nice cool glass of something!

Ready for staining. Had to use the materials available and sometimes even glueing pieces edge to edge to achieve the width of board needed. Most of the wood came from my brother-in-law’s scrap at his building site. All spruce milled down to a thickness of 1”. The back is scraps I had from cut-offs, spruce, poplar and cedar.

Well, if you are going to make something different, Ron, then why not a chair. Must say, I like the design of those very much. Should be as good satisfying project and you can even sit down on the job when it's finished.

Cheers, Nerys
When the winds before the rain, soon you may make sail again, but when the rain's before the wind, tops'l sheets and halyards mind

Got this set of plans to build a couple of these chairs to relax in after a long day by the pond. Came with full size patterns to cut out and transfer to hardboard. Making templates for replicate chairs. My grandsons want to build them too.
